I will preface this article to say that Starcraft 2 is exceptionally well balanced, however, many players still want to know what the best Starcraft 2 race is.

I believe that there is an actual answer to this question, but I also believe that this answer changes based on your skill level. Some races are easier than others to play as a beginner, whereas others really shine in the hands of advanced players.

Best Starcraft 2 Race for Beginner’s – Terran

Without a doubt, no race is better for a newbie Starcraft 2 player than Terran. The fact is that Terrans are simply by far the best beginner class, and it comes down to a simple reason: Terran are the only race which can cover so many roles with just three units.

Yes, the Marine, Marauder, and Medivac are just far too strong in the hands of a beginner. In high-level play, things are fairly balanced, but I’m players can easily hit Platinum league with using nothing but those 3 units (including SCVs and MULEs of course), regardless of what the enemy gets, in spite of having a very low APM score.

Additionally, MULEs allow for Terrans to need less expansions, and lowering and raising Supply Depots lets Terran players form a complete wall which requires no thought at all.

The truth is that beginners will always do better with Terran than any other race. This does, of course, level out once you reach higher levels of play.

However, one of the best Starcraft 2 tips I can give you if you are brand new to the game is to try out all the races. Terran can give you some quick success, but you gain insight into the weaknesses of each race by playing them.

Best Race for Those with Low APM

Despite Terran being the easiest race to use as a beginner, you need to have a solid APM score to be successful with this race at a very high level of play. Splitting Marines when you go against Banelings, protecting tanks from Mutalisks, dodging Force Fields, and managing double or triple-pronged drops takes a lot of attention and APM.

As a result, you rarely see a professional-level game where the Terran’s APM is under 175, let alone under 150.
Some people just do not have the twitch reactions to play at APMs (actions per minute) of 200+ no matter how much they practice.

However, I have noticed the Zerg is the best Starcraft 2 race for players with low APM. Routinely, you will notice that Zerg players almost always have lower APMs than their opponents, regardless of the skill-level of the Zerg player.

This has to do with the way the Zerg is set up. First off, Hatcheries produce all your units, so you only need 1 keybind for your Hatcheries. Secondly, you just do not have as many unit choices as a Zerg player – especially viable unit combinations. Zerg armies are always much less complex than other armies.

Zerg players are more concerned with the bigger picture – building up larger economies and armies that are easy to replenish – often winning long-term games via unrelenting pressure. This just does not require as much APM as say, a Protoss player who is micro-managing Phoenix, Sentries, Colossi, and Stalkers in a single battle.

As a result, for players that have lower APM scores, Zerg might be the best Starcraft 2 race for you.

Best SC2 Race for “Gamers”

On the flip-side, Protoss players have been extremely dominate in professional gaming, both inside and outside of Korea in recent months. However, I have noticed one thing about all Protoss professional players that are winning big tournaments: they have extremely high APM scores.

After all, they need them. Protoss play has always hinged on being able to land perfect Force Fields, which is not an easy feat in late-game play. Additionally, Protoss players thrive on harassing with Phoenixes, especially against Zerg players. This also requires solid micro skills and a very high APM to keep your Phoenix alive while still dealing meaningful damage.

As a result, if you’ve been playing games like Counterstrike for years, and have very good twitch-gaming skills, Protoss might be the best Starcraft 2 race for you.

The Best Starcraft 2 Race – Final Say

While there is no true best Starcraft 2 race, Terran are no doubt the easiest race for new players to pick up and start doing well with. From there, players who struggle with micro may find more success with the Zerg race, whereas players who excel at micro might do better with Protoss.
