The Starcraft 2 Immortal is among one of the most poorly-used units in Starcraft 2. It can be quite strong, but many players simply do not use if effectively. In this article, I am going to be giving you some strategies for both using this unit and strategies for how to counter it.

While this article is a good starting point, if you are serious about getting better at Starcraft 2, we recommend HotKeyIt, the only guide created by pros. You can get it by clicking here.

Starcraft 2 Immortal Strategy

The unit has two unique features: hardened shields and its bonus damaged versus armored units. Hardened shields limits the damage of any attack to 10 damage. This means as long as its shields are active, it will take 10 damage whether it is being hit by a full Siege Tank blast or a Roach acid spit.

Additionally, it does bonus damaged versus armored units. This bonus damage is not slight like the Stalker’s but rather a central component to the Immortal: it does massive amounts of damage to armored units and is fairly weak versus light or non-armored units.

As a result, it makes sense to use the Immortal as a unit to take out high-damage armored units. However, this sounds good on paper but does not always work out well in theory.

For example, a single Immortal can take out several Roaches at once, especially if both units are fully upgraded (at which point it will take out a Roach in just 2 hits). The problem is however that Roaches only cost 75 minerals and 25 gas (100 total), whereas an Immortal costs 250 minerals and 100 gas (350 total).

When you consider that an Immortal costs as much as 3.5 Roaches, they don’t seem so strong anymore! That is one thing you have to recognize: Immortals are very expensive.

As a result, your Immortals need to be survivors in order to make them cost effective. The problem is Immortals are exceptionally slow, making them bad at kiting. As a result, Immortals need to be protected and Immortals need back-up.

For example, Roaches have a range of 4, whereas Immortals have a Range of 5. If you mix in a wall of Zealots to act as a buffer for your Immortals (and to soak up damage for them), your Immortals will fair much better off in terms of cost-effectiveness.

If you take any of the Starcraft 2 tips away from this article, please remember that Immortals are one of the very few units in Starcraft 2 that are actually over-utilized. Many players do not consider their high cost when adding this unit to their army; if it has no purpose in your overall strategy, there is no need to produce this unit!

Basically, you want to keep your Immortal numbers at low, but safe number. A handful of Immortals is deadly for an armored army, but 20 Immortals is suicide when the Zerg tech-switches to Zerglings.

I like to think of the Immortal’s usefulness as part of a “threat” factor or when mixed in with Colossi. In other words, just having a few Immortals on the field can make a Roach-heavy Zerg want to target them down; by retreating with your Immortals, your less “dangerous” units may gain a lot of free shots.

Also, when you have Colossi on the field, Immortals are generally left alone. Be sure to individually control each one though to focus down armored units for best results.

Starcraft 2 Immortal Counters

Taking out Immortals in Starcraft 2 is easy with the right units. Zerg players can use Zerglings, Hydralisks, and even Infestors (Neural Parasite); all are very effective. Terran players can opt for the Ghost’s EMP to take out shields and then clean them up with practically any unit. For Protoss, Zealots are particularly effective against the Immortal.

This unit is particularly good in Protoss match-ups when combined with Colossi, as Colossi are great versus Zealots when they have an Immortal/Zealot/Stalker/Sentry wall to stay behind. With Colossi melting away Zealots quickly, it can be hard to large numbers of Immortals!

Starcraft 2 Immortal Strategy and Counters Conclusion

You should now have a good idea of how to use the Starcraft 2 Immortal in competitive play. It is a great unit and helps win a lot of Starcraft 2 matches – just remember not to waste them as they cost so much money!
