The Terran race in Starcraft 2 is easily the most position-dependent race. In this article on Starcraft 2 Terran strategies, I will be revealing what exactly I mean by this and how you can use your positioning to dominate your opponents in online play.

In this section of the Starcraft 2 Terran guide, I will be covering not only the best SC2 Terran strategies but also specific race-vs-race match-ups so you can get specific builds and strategies for each race.

Starcraft 2 Terran Strategy: Race Match-Ups

Before I cover positioning, I wanted to give you the links for the individual articles for the race-vs-race match-ups:

In those articles, you will find counters and strategies that you can use as a Terran player when going up against any of those races in ladder matches.

Starcraft 2 Terran Strategy – Positioning

As mentioned in the beginning of this article, the Terran race is all about positioning. This is due to the fact that the core units in any Terran army is the Siege Tank, Marine, Marauder, and Medivac. These units thrive on positioning.

In particular, what Terran players do best on are maps with tight choke points or maps with lots of Terran changes. For example, on Metalopolis, Terran players can easily elevator units into the main base with Medivacs, and when your opponent retaliates, scoop them back up into your Medivacs then drop them on the low ground. This cliff-abuse is a main-stay in Terran strategy.

Siege Tanks also can get in on the action. For example, on the same map (Metalopolis), if your opponent takes one of the high-yield (gold) expansions, you can shell their base by setting up Siege Tanks at either Xel’Naga watch-tower. Since those towers are on the top of a tiny ramp, you can block the entrance with more tanks, Marines, and Marauders, and it is virtually impossible for the enemy to hold on to their expansion or stop your attack.

As a Terran player, you should always be looking for high ground or low ground on which to engage your enemy. On a map like Shakuras Plateau, you can use Medivacs to carry Siege Tanks to the wall outside the opponent’s base (not the wall by the natural expansion), and then set your tanks up in Siege Mode. This will give you free-reign to shell many parts of their main base.

To take it a step further, you can set up a bunch of tanks on the low ground, then drop Marines right at the top of the cliff. You can then stim the Marines, run in and pick off a few buildings, and when the enemy comes to counter, you can move your Marines back to your tanks. Marines are great versus air units, and tanks are great versus ground units, so this is a really hard push for your opponent to stop.

As a Terran player, there are a multitude of situations where you can use this tactic. However, you are not just limited to cliff-abuse. Another great way to use positioning to your advantage is to set up your Siege Tanks in such a way that they can either defend or contain your opponent and use Terrain as a defense.

A common example of this is to wall off your entrance to your base, and then place a Siege Tank on the high ground. This will allow the tank to defend the natural expansion yet remain safe on the high ground.

You can also use high-ground to keep opponents inside their base. Many Terran players will even throw down a few structures like Bunkers, Turrets, and Supply Depots outside their opponents base to create artificial “terrain” and defense, then put Siege Tanks behind their buildings. This is called a contain and leaves the Terran player free to grab more expansions and starve the opponent out.
