Starcraft 2 Terran vs Terran Strategies
In this portion of the Starcraft 2 Terran guide, I will be covering the methodical Terran vs Terran match-up. In 95% of matches, there are only two different builds players end up using. In this article, I will be covering each build, along with counters and advantages and disadvantages to each build.
Starcraft 2 Terran vs Terran Strategy #1 – Tank/Viking
The most common Starcraft 2 Terran strategy to use in TvT is to simply mass Siege Tanks and Vikings. This is one of the most effective strategies and most Terran games come down to these two units.
The reason for this is simple: Vikings can take out any air units the Terran can produce as well as provide site for the Siege Tanks. Siege Tanks can take out any ground unit the Terran army can produce with ease. As a result, there is no reason not to mass these two units.
What makes TvT different from other match-ups is that Terran have no melee units like Zerg or Protoss. Zerg players have Zerglings and Protoss players have Zealots. Since Siege Tanks have a minimum range, you cannot simply just mass Siege Tanks or you will lose to Zerglings or Zealots.
In TvT however, there are no melee units to contend with. Sure, Marines and Marauders can move into melee range and shoot, but if you spread your tanks out this will be a non-issue.
As a result, I would suggest simply walling up in TvT, building a macro CC, and moving right into Siege Tanks and Vikings. In other words, your build would be something like:
9/11 – Supply Depot
12/19 – Barracks
13/19 – Refinery
15/19 – Orbital Command
17/19 – Factory
..and then keep training SCVs as you work on getting out Siege Mode technology. Expand inside your main – using the extra CC for MULEs and to train more SCVs. In the mean time, you will want to scan the opponent around the 6:15 mark to check for fast Banshees, which I will cover in the next section.
Once you have your tanks and a few Vikings out with Siege Mode done, you can lift off your Orbital Command and land it at your natural expansion; your Vikings can protect you from Banshees and drops.
From here, start training tons of Tanks and Vikings, keeping about equal numbers of each. As soon as you have an advantage in the number of tanks or Vikings, you will want to push out. What you do is set up in Siege Mode outside the players base, and use your Vikings to gain air control. From here, push your tanks forward, 1 at a time.
If you use your Vikings to spot, you can kill off the opponents buildings and units from a distance that he cannot see you from. This slow, methodical push is very effective – the only thing you have to do is slowly drain the opponent’s energy from their Orbital Commands so they can’t scan and take out all Vikings or Buildings that may provide line of sight. Push forward slow and it is an easy win all the way up to high-Diamond / Master’s level of play.

Opting for a fast Banshee is very common in TvT, especially at the lower levels of play. In order to defend yourself from this, you need to consider two things. First is building placement; you want to centralize buildings around your main CC, your entrance, and your natural. This way you only have a few areas to defend from attack.
If you spread your buildings out all over your entire main, it will be hard to deal with cloaked Banshees without building tons of Missile Turrets or wasting a lot of scanner sweeps.
The second thing you have to worry about is being simply prepared. I recommend scanning the opponent’s base at around the 6:15 mark so you can see what is going on; if you see 2 Refineries up or a very fast Starport, you can expect Banshees.
At this point, you throw up a Missile Turret in your main and at your natural (to provide detection) and get out a single Viking (to take out the Banshee). Banshees cannot hit air units, so a single Viking can handle all the Banshees your opponent can muster. Park one Viking and 1 Missile Turret around each cluster of buildings and you will be well-defended.
Starcraft 2 Terran vs Terran Strategy Conclusion
If you are in the Bronze-Diamond league in Starcraft 2, you can easily win TvT match-ups just by remembering these Starcraft 2 tips: go for fast Siege Tanks and Vikings, taking your expansion when Siege Mode is done, scout for Banshees, and then make Siege Tanks and Vikings.
