The Starcraft 2 Terran vs Zerg match-up is a key battle to master if you are a Terran player. By using the Starcraft 2 Terran strategies in this article, you should be able to win this match-up the majority of the time, even against players of equal skill levels.

There are three primary strategies you can use versus Zerg players: bio-mech, mech, and the Banshee rush.

Using Bio-Mech in Terran vs Zerg

Bio-Mech is the most popular build Terran players use against Zerg. The premise behind it is simple: Marines and Medivacs easily take out Zerglings and Mutalisk, Marauders and Medivacs easily take out Roaches and Ultralisks, and Siege Tanks easily take out Banelings, Infestors, and Hydralisks (though Hydras rarely make an appearance in TvZ).

As a result, you can easily throw up a bunch of Barracks, 1-2 Factories, and a Starport and make whatever units you need based on what the Zerg player is up to. If there are all Zerglings, Banelings, and Mutalisks – all you need are Marines, Medivacs, and Siege Tanks. This is the most common Zerg build to use against Terran players.

If you see Roaches on the field, you can just add in Marauders to your mix quite easily. Finally, if the game goes late and Broodlords come out, you can easily grab a few Vikings to deal with those.

Bio-Mech Strategy

Playing the match is easy. The only thing you have to worry about is Banelings getting to your Marines when you are on the offensive. What you want to do is set up your Siege Tank line (spread out) at the edge of the creep. You then scan the creep, and stim up ~8 Marines and use the Marines to quickly take out all Creep Tumors in the area.

You never push out over creep, as creep gives Zerg units a speed bonus. What you do is leap frog your tanks, only unsieging a few at a time, and slowly push forward as you recede the creep.

When the Zerg attacks, you stim your Marines and retreat to your tank line, running through the line of tanks that are all spread out. The reason you do this is because Siege Tanks easily take out Banelings, and you cannot allow your Marines to be hit by Banelings. Your Marines are there to protect your tanks from Zerglings and Mutalisks – not to fight Banelings.

While you are pushing forward on the creep, a great strategy you can use is to load up a Medivac or two with 8 Marines and drop it off behind the Zerg player’s expansion(s). The more drops you can manage the better. Just drop the Marines off, stim, and let them attack and go back to focusing on the center. You can often snipe at least 1 expansion this way, and at a worse case scenario you are able to push forward a lot in the middle.

Just keep pushing forward and doing drops; as soon as you take out a few Zerg expansions this is easy. You never want to over-commit as a Terran player and you never engage on creep, just because a few Banelings can wipe out your army. Some Terran players like to even set up Bunkers and Missile Turrets in the center of the map to have a place to fall back to, which also works well.

Starcraft 2 Terran vs Zerg Strategy – Mech

Mech is played out just like Mech-Bio – you push forward slowly, do not engage on creep, and slowly corner the Zerg player. The difference between which of the two you will use depends on the map and personal preference.

Mech works best on maps which have very tight choke-points, and where there is a lot of high-ground areas that you can abuse as a Terran player.

Whenever there is high ground overlooking an expansion, or high ground that on an exit-way to the main, Terran players can set up Siege tanks here and lay siege to the enemy’s expansion without being easily attacked.

The main difference between bio-mech and mech is that as a mech player, your Hellions will be your main method of dealing with Zerglings whereas your Thors will be the main method of dealing with Mutalisks (these two units replace Marines).

Thors deal with Mutalisks well once they are in sufficient number (about 6 Thors is needed to take out a large Mutalisk cloud where the person is using the magic box trick).

Hellions are great versus Zerglings, but only in close quarters. This is why maps with tight passageways work better than maps with wide open centers. On open maps, you will get surrounded by Zerglings, which makes Hellions a lot less effective. On maps with straight-away attacks, it is much harder for Zerglings to surround tanks, making Hellions strong here.

The Banshee Rush

Rushing to Banshees is another great TvZ strategy, and works particularly well if you open with a hellion harass. What you can do is open up with a standard build, and throw down a Factory at around 17 supplies (as soon as you get the gas for it). While it is building, start a Reactor on your Barracks. Go for a double-refinery while this is all being built so you can start saving gas.

When the Factory and Reactor finish, lift off the Barracks and swap it with the Factory, so the Factory has an instant Reactor. Start pumping out Hellions, two at a time, and move out to harass the Zerg when you have 6. As soon as you save up 300 gas, drop 2 Starports in a hidden part of your base at the same time.

Start pumping out Banshees while you are harassing with Hellions, and move out when you have 2-4 (depending on # of Queens at the Zerg base). You do not even need Cloak – 1 Banshee wins versus a Queen, and 2 Banshees wins versus a Spore Crawler. If there are 2 Queens, move out when you get 2 Banshees and you will win the game outright.

Even if the person is getting a Lair, this often can allow you to pick off tons of Drones before they can rebuke your attack. Work on an expansion during this time in case your attack doesn’t finish them off – a lot of times you do not kill off the Zerg player but just cause so much damage you can then transition and win easily.
