Starcraft 2 Zerg Tips – The Top 5 List

With the introduction out of the way, let’s get started on this list of Starcraft 2 Zerg tips!

Tip #1 – Spread Overlords To Key Positions

One of the primary differences between good and bad Zerg players is that good Zerg players know where to put Overlords, whereas bad Zerg players tend to keep them all clustered in your base. Overlords can fly and have a big sight radius, so you need to take advantage of this!

One key position to place your Overlord is over the inaccessible area (due to water or space or whatever) outside the natural expansion. This way you can keep tabs on when the natural expansion goes up (which hints to you whether you are safe to keep Droning or need to get defense).

Later in the game, you can convert this Overlord into an Overseer and it is already in position to either drop a Changeling at the natural (usually a very safe spot) or even fly in to scout and contaminate key structures.

Other key Overlord locations include just outside the main (sacrifice this at the 7:00 mark to get a scout off if necessary), as well as over any inaccessible areas (water, cliffs, etc) in the center of the map. You can often place your Overlord in locations that lets you keep tabs on the main map and unit flow without putting it at risk.

Also, be sure to put it on the outskirts of your base, about halfway up either side of the map along the border to spot dropships that might be headed your way.

Tip #2 – Spread the Creep

Even at a high-level of play, many Zerg players forget to spread the creep or do not spread it adequately. Creep is incredibly dangerous for the opponent and is a virtually free defense for you as a Zerg player. Invest in an extra Queen and make her only duty to spawn creep tumors.

Zerg units move ~33% faster on the creep. Speedlings can quickly move between all your bases and defend against drops or any sort of sneak-attacks on your expansions.

Additionally, Banelings (especially with speed upgrade) are lightning-fast on the creep. Ground units like Marines simply cannot out-run them. As a result, if you spread the creep, you force the Terran player to spend a lot of time and money scanning to kill off your Creep tumors, which gives you adequate time to defend.

Tip #3 – Always Inject Larva – Even Beyond Capacity

The Zerg race is strong late-game if you are good about keeping on top of your Inject Larva ability. Even if you do not have the money or supplies to train units, you need to be on top of remembering to Inject Larva constantly.

Good Zerg players always have tons of Larva at the ready even when they do not need units. This gives them a massive advantage over their opponents. For example, if your opponent gets a great drop on you and takes out 20 harvesters, you can recover from that in 30 seconds by queueing up 20 Drones at once. On the other hand, such a loss of harvesters is absolutely devastating for the opponent.

Additionally, you always want to have a huge stable of Larva before going in for a major attack. This way you can replenish your army to 200/200 as soon as you lose it in a battle.

Zerg Tip #4 – Sacrifice Drones If Needed in Late Games

While Zerg are great at building up a large economy, late in the game when you have plenty of resources saved up and locations start getting mined out, one of the best Starcraft 2 Zerg tips is to actually sacrifice your drones to free up supplies.

Many high-level Zerg players will max out at 200/200, bank about 3000 resources, then sacrifice their Drones down to 40-50 total drones (from a high of 75-90). This frees up an extra 35-50 supplies they can use on more units. The 40-50 Drones then spread evenly among bases that still have resources, as late in the game many bases may start to get mined out.

More units on the field means your are more likely to win your fight; 50 supplies is a huge army difference and sacrificing a bunch of Drones really can make a huge difference. As you can imagine, 100 extra Banelings on the field from sacrificing from 90 to 40 Drones can really turn the tide of battle!

Zerg Tip #5 – Control the Xel’Naga Watchtowers

Zerg have the easiest time of all the races controlling the Xel’Naga Watchtowers thanks to creep speed bonuses and Zerglings with the speed upgrade. You can send a few Speedlings out to each tower to take out the Marine, Zealot, or whatever is guarding it then leave just a single Speedling there.

This way, you will only lose 25 minerals if the enemy takes out your Speedling, but you will cost them 50-100 each time you take out a Probe, SCV, Marine, or Zealot.

Additionally, by controlling the towers, you can easily control the pace of the entire game. You can retain vision of the majority of the map with your creep, Xel’Naga towers, and Overlords, and limit the enemy to no vision outside of their own main base.
