Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss Strategy
I think that the Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss match-up is perhaps one of the most balanced match-ups in game. I have played as both Zerg and Protoss at a high level, and no matter which race I played as, I always felt confident going into the battle, and I will be sharing the strategies that have made me confident in this Starcraft 2 Zerg guide.
In this article, I will be giving you some great Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss strategies that you can use to destroy Protoss players. These Starcraft 2 tips really can help improve your success rate as Zerg.
Tip #1 – Hydralisks Are Incredibly Effective in ZvP
The Hydralisk is pretty weak in ZvZ and ZvT, but it is an amazing unit in ZvP match-ups. It completely decimates the entire Protoss ground-army; the only thing that easily stops it is the Colossus. As long as there are no Colossus on the field, you want Hydralisks in your army.
While this article is a good starting point, if you are serious about getting better at Starcraft 2, we recommend HotKeyIt, the only guide created by pros. You can get it by clicking here.If you have Hydralisks with the range upgrade before the Protoss player gets fully-upgraded Colossi, you can press and defeat the enemy player even if you are on the same number of bases.
Tip #2 – Use Corruptors to Take Out Colossi
The only unit which will give Zerg players trouble in ZvP is the Colossus. Fortunately, the Corruptor is an excellent unit to use against the Colossus. If the Protoss player gets 6 or more Colossi, you can even use the “sacrifice” method.
This involves training 12-18 Corruptors and just sacrificing them to kill off as many Colossi as you can. If you use 12 Corruptors and just throw them at Colossi, they can take them down in 1-2 hits, especially if you use Corruption. Even if the enemy player takes them out with Stalkers, as long as you take down most of the Colossi you made a great trade.
The Colossus takes a long time to build, whereas the Zerg player can quickly replace lost Corruptors. If you lose 18 Corruptors to take out 6 Colossi, you just cost the protoss player 3-5 minutes (depending on the number of Robotics Facilities and Chrono Boost saved), whereas you can quickly train 6 more Corruptors and 12 Hydralisks in a minute and push out before the Protoss player has time to rebuild all those Colossi they lost.
Tip #3 – Don’t be Afraid to Take to the Air
One serious mistake I have noticed Zerg players take in ZvP match-ups is that they seem afraid to take to the air and rather try to force their wins on the ground. This is not always the wisest decision.
In particular, if the Protoss army is particularly Sentry or ground-only army, you can often get away with an air or drop-based army.
For example, lets say that the Protoss player is running with 12+ Sentries and cutting up your army with Force Fields. You can load up 24 Banelings into a bunch of Overlords then drop them over the Protoss ball. This will easily wipe out all the Sentries, at which point your ground army will be free to engage the Protoss without interruption.
Additionally, you can make an extremely effective tech-switch that is practically not counterable by moving to a Mutalisk ball with upgrades. Mutalisks are actually decent versus Stalkers and Sentries, and if the supply gap is too great from there being too many Colossi, Zealots, or Immortals on the field, you can switch to Mutalisks and do a lot of damage.
Protoss players often will get Phoenix to stop the Mutalisk, but upgrades can quickly nullify this unit. A Mutalisk with 3 armor will take less than half damage against a Phoenix which does not have weapons upgrades, and Protoss players rarely upgrade air weapons. If you can secretly upgrade your Mutalisks, you can tech switch to them and have an unstoppable unit.
Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Protoss Strategies Conclusion
By following these 3 tips in this portion of the Starcraft 2 Zerg guide, you will find that playing against Protoss players is much easier. These Starcraft 2 ZvP strategies are all you need to overcome the “Protoss death ball” that so many Zerg players unjustly fear.
