Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Terran Strategy
I think that out of all the match-ups, Zerg players struggle the most with the Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Terran match-up. In this article, I will be covering some great Zerg vs Terran strategy that you can use to counter the most common Terran builds.
In particular, Terran players opt for three common builds versus Zerg players: Marine/Tanks/Medivacs (aka Bio-Mech), Hellions/Thors/Tanks (mech), and Banshee rushes. Of course, there are other builds, but you will run into these 3 strategies 95% of the time, so the focus of this portion of the Starcraft 2 Zerg guide will be on these builds.
Dealing with Bio-Mech and Mech
As of late, bio-mech, or a build which uses primarily Marines and Medivacs backed up by Siege Tanks or the occasional Thor, is the most popular build Terran players use in TvZ match-ups. Fortunately, it is not impossible to beat.
The first thing to understand about the bio-mech build is that it requires quite a large investment to get out Medivacs, Marines with stim/combat shields, and Siege Tanks. This gives the Zerg player plenty of time to expand the map, especially if you scout out a fast Terran expansion.
Do not plan on an early attack if you run into a standard bio-mech build. What you want to do is at least grab 2 expansions (staying 1 ahead of your opponent), and get out Banelings (with speed upgrade), Zerglings, Infestors, and ultimately Mutalisks. You want to work on melee/armor upgrades for your ground units and expand the creep the best you can.
This is your standard unit composition and strategy versus most Terran armies and sets you up to be able to defeat them quite easily.
Bad Terran players love marching right over the creep without taking this out (mid-Platinum and below this is common). This is so easy to stop – simply use Banelings or Fungal Growth or a combination to take out the Marines, as Banelings easily catch Marines when they are on creep. Once most of the Marines are gone, you can clean everything up with Zerglings.

You can get it by clicking here.Even against good Terran players, the key to stopping this build though is to simply sit back and expand while maxing out a Zergling/Baneling/Infestor/Mutalisk army. Then, when the Terran player finally pushes out, engage them in open territory. Try to flank the Siege Tanks the best you can, either with Zerglings or Mutalisks.
Do not let Mutalisks engage Marines or Thors – save your Banelings for the Marines and Zerglings for any ground-based mech. Your Mutalisks specifically exist to snipe Siege Tanks and harass – they are never to engage Marines directly.
Versus full mech builds, things do not change much, except that Banelings are a lot less useful. Increase your Infestor and Zergling numbers; using Neural Parasite to control as many Thors and Tanks as you can, Zerglings to snipe Thors and Tanks, and then Fungal Growth to snag any Hellions. Hellions are not nearly as effective against Zerglings when they are weakened and rooted in place.
You can still use Mutalisks as well to snipe tanks which lack Thor back-up.
Stopping the Banshee Rush and Other Air Assaults
Stopping the Banshee rush as a Zerg player is easy – you just have to see it ahead of time. You always scout your Terran opponent at around the 6:30-7:00 mark to look for an early starport. Should you scout an early Starport or Banshees, you then have plenty of time to make more Queens and throw up a Spore Crawler at each location.
Later in the game, you need to spread your Overlords along common paths that Medivacs might take to spot them in action. If the enemy player gets Vikings to take down your Overlords, use Mutalisks to pick off the Vikings and restore your former Overlord spread. Rebuilding a few Overlords is much cheaper than losing an entire expansion because you did not scout ahead of time.
Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Terran Conclusion
The Starcraft 2 Zerg vs Terran match-up is the most micro-intense battle, but you can make it much easier with good scouting and patience. Do what you can with your Mutalisks to pick off lagging Siege Tanks, and only engage Marines with Fungal Growth and Banelings and you will find this match-up gets a lot easier.
Good scouting is needed to stop air rushes and drops. They are completely harmless if you actually see them coming and can prepare for them. Another one of the top Starcraft 2 tips is to throw down a few Spine Crawlers and Spore Crawlers at each expansion late in the game, especially if your opponent likes to drop with a single Medivac.
